We are saddened to learn of the passing of David Morris on October 14, 2016. A West Virginia native and lifelong champion of Appalachian mountain culture, David was a third-generation balladeer, songwriter, and recording artist. He learned his first music at home from his parents, Dallis and Anna Hill Morris, his grandparents–especially maternal grandmother, Lula Jane Woods Hill–and many of his neighbors who played and sang. He was a tradition bearer of the oral culture of the mountains, and was deeply involved in the issues of his time. Appalachian Regional Magazine called him “the irrepressible cultural minister of pure country music.” (www.hurherald.com)
In the early 1970’s Appalshop recorded an interview with and performance by Dave, which we are sharing today. Please join us in remembering his life and music.
