Tribute to Thelma Stovall

Written by appalarchive

Join us today in celebrating the birthday of the remarkable Thelma Stovall (1919-1994), first woman to be elected lieutenant governor of Kentucky and tough, lifelong advocate for the rights of women and working people. This video, produced c. 1980 for Headwaters TV, documents a quilting bee held in her honor; each pattern represents one of Stovall’s career milestones or causes, including Kentucky Commission on Women, the Equal Rights Amendment, and the Tobacco Workers Union. In an interview, Stovall reflects on her political career, how she was first recruited to run for state legislature, labor and party politics, and her decision to retire from politics.
