Bill Crabtree and the Clinch Valley Boys send up the classic song about a hitchhiker’s ghostly encounter with the driver of “Phantom 309” in this excerpt from the 1972 Appalshop film Music Fair. Instead of Big Joe and his semi truck, the narrator meets “Big Josie” and her wheelbarrow full of empty pop bottles. The song is brought to life with drawings and animation by Kentucky artist Glenn Palumbo.
Music Fair was shot on 16mm reversal film, and was preserved by Appalshop Archive in 2003. Original film and audio materials, as well as the original artwork by Glenn Palumbo, are in the Archive’s collections.
